Purpose

  • This tutorial is for complete beginners to learn how to play the flute.


🛠️ Flute Setup

  • Flute Components: The flute has three parts: head joint, body, and foot joint.

  • Assembly: Start with the head joint to simplify sound production. Align the hole of the head joint with the first key on the body.


🎵 Making Sound

  • Place your lower lip on the mouthpiece and blow gently across it.

  • Tips:

    • Blow softly, like blowing out a candle.

    • Keep your bottom lip attached to the mouthpiece.


💪 Holding the Flute

  • Once comfortable with the head joint, assemble the entire flute.

  • Hold the flute at a 90-degree angle from your head, supporting it with one hand.


👉 Finger Placement

  • Left Hand:

    • Forefinger on the first key.

    • Middle finger on the second key.

    • Ring finger on the third key.

    • Pinky on the foot joint.

    • Thumb on the side key.

  • Right Hand:

    • Forefinger on the first key.

    • Middle finger on the second key.

    • Ring finger on the third key.

    • Pinky on the foot joint.

    • Thumb for support.


🎼 First Notes

  • Learn these fingerings:

    • G: Thumb, forefinger, middle finger, pinky (right hand).

    • A: Thumb, forefinger, middle finger (right hand).

    • B: Thumb, forefinger, pinky (right hand).

    • C: Forefinger (left hand), pinky (right hand).

    • D: Thumb, middle finger (right hand), ring finger (right hand).


🎶 Simple Song

  • Practice playing "Mary Had a Little Lamb" using the notes learned.


👅 Tonguing Technique

  • Start by practicing the "tu" sound without the flute.

  • Add the flute back in while maintaining embouchure and integrate it into the song.


🧹 Cleaning the Flute

  • Disassemble the flute by holding the barrel and removing the head and foot joints.

  • Use a cleaning cloth to wipe the insides and the keys.
